PCNGI Partners Transport Unions To Reduce Fares

…empowers youths with CNG tricycles

The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi) has launched its Transport Fare Drop Programme in Abuja, aiming to promote the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cleaner and more affordable alternative to traditional fuels.

In a statement, Michael Oluwagbemi, Program Director/Chief Executive of PCNGi, announced that the initiative is set to lower transportation costs across Nigeria.

As part of this effort, PCNGi signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to convert fleet vehicles to CNG. This agreement covers the Abuja-Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Adavi route and promises fare reductions of 30-40% for commuters.

Starting September 28, 2024, the initiative will expand to 38 centres in states including Kaduna, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Delta, and Edo, as part of a nationwide push for CNG adoption in commercial transportation.

In collaboration with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), PCNGi will also launch the Nigerian Police CNG Conversion Programme on September 30, 2024. This programme will train police cadets to manage CNG conversion centres established by the NPTF.

To commemorate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary on October 1, 2024, PCNGi will partner with the Ministry of Youths to launch the CNG Tricycle Empowerment Programme, which will provide 2,000 youths with CNG-powered tricycles, offering employment opportunities while promoting green transportation.

In addition, PCNGi will implement the Kogi State Conversion Incentive Programme on October 2, 2024, with CNG buses being handed over to Kogi’s mass transit system and three new conversion centres opening in the state.

The week-long initiatives will conclude in Ekiti State with the delivery of CNG buses and the establishment of four new conversion centres to further boost CNG adoption in the country.
