Lagos PDP Felicitates Sarumi On 80th Birthday

 

The Lagos State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to Chief Oladapo Babatunde Sarumi, a founding member of the party in the state, on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

Chief Sarumi’s milestone birthday falls on Thursday, May 16, 2024.

The announcement was made on Wednesday in a statement signed by the party’s publicity secretary, Hon. Hakeem Amode.

The statement praised Chief Sarumi as a “visionary leader and a devoted Nigerian,” whose influence has significantly contributed to the political and economic progress of Nigeria.

“We celebrate a visionary leader and a devoted Nigerian, whose impact has touched numerous lives and significantly contributed to the political and economic progress of our nation. Your graceful aging and the opportunity to savour the fruits of your labour bring us immense joy.

“We fondly recall your tireless efforts, alongside others, in laying a solid foundation for our party in Lagos, your home state. As you mark this milestone, we pray for continued good health and grace for many more years of fruitful existence,” the statement read.

Born on May 16, 1944, Chief Sarumi’s educational journey began in Lagos State, where he attended primary school in Epe and secondary school at Anwar-ud-Deen Secondary School, Agege.

He pursued further education in the United Kingdom before returning to Nigeria to study computer engineering at the University of Lagos. His professional career saw him rise to the position of Director at the Computer Control Department of the Nigeria Port Authority.

Chief Sarumi’s political career began in 1975 with his association with the late Obafemi Awolowo.

He has held several significant political appointments, including Chairman of the Lagos State Printing Corporation, Chairman of the Lagos State Ferry Services, and Board Member of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.

The celebrant also served as the Federal Secretary of Communications in 1993, Minister for Information in 1998, and Minister of Integration for West Africa.

In addition to his political roles, Chief Sarumi has been active in the business sector, serving as President of Wang Computers in Africa, Chairman of Datamatics Nig Ltd, and consultant to Rank Xerox and CBC.

He holds esteemed traditional titles such as Seriki Nyaki of Katsina State and Jagunmolu of Epe, Lagos State, reflecting his broad influence and respect across various sectors.

The Lagos PDP’s tribute underscores Chief Sarumi’s enduring legacy and continued relevance in Nigeria’s socio-political landscape.
